Veterans Memorial Park, Inc was formed on November 13, 1946 as a joint ownership of the American Legion Post 123 of Mt Airy and The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2019. The Board of Directors consists of five members from each of the Posts to conduct business for the Corporation. All funds received from donations, revenues from events, and rentals are used solely for the operation of the Park. The members are to have no personal gain from any events scheduled by the park.
The main purposes of the Corporation are
- to provide a meeting place and recreation facilities for the members of both organizations.
- to provide a place of recreation for the community and veterans and their families.
- to serve as a Memorial for all who served in any war or conflict.
The park has a Campground from primitive to full hookups within walking distance of the city of Mount Airy known also known as Mayberry USA.
The Park currently sponsors three major events a year: The Old Time and Bluegrass Fiddlers Convention, held the first Friday and Saturday in June every year; the Surry County Agricultural Fair in September, and a car show/swap meet the weekend of the Mount Airy Autumn Leaves Festival.
